Chateau Royale and Fort St. Elme in Collioure, Sud de France

Chateau Royale and Fort St. Elme in Collioure, Sud de France

The big Chateau Royale divids the small Catalan village Collioure in two with its dominating placement in the middle of this village.

Originally the summer castle for the King of Mallorca in the days when the Catalans ruled the country.

Look to the hill in the back left. Here is a more modern small fortification: Fort St. Elme - constructed by Vauban in his busy period of constructing military installations after the French takeover in 1659 with the Peace of the Pyreenees.

Another version from Collioure with the high walls of the chateau to the right.
