In the far away North: Sunrise at 10AM in Finnmark, Norway

In the far away North: Sunrise at 10AM in Finnmark, Norway

Porsangerfjorden in Finnmark - a fine January morning at 10 AM.

From the net: Finnmark is the northernmost and easternmost county in Norway (Svalbard is not considered a county).
By area, Finnmark is Norway's largest county; even larger than the neighboring country of Denmark.
However, with a population of about 75,000, it is also the least populated of all Norwegian counties.

Red houses in a white world. Finnmark, Norway, Arctic

I have here started on my way South, driving along Porsangerfjorden in Finnmark - as a curiosity, this morning I am (70 N 26 E) as far east as Bucharest, Romania, and as far north as Point Barrow in Alaska.
Finnmark also have a border directly to Russia and the Murmansk region a bit further East.

Almost alone at the North Cape Center, Norway Arctic

Almost alone at the North Cape Center, Norway Arctic

At a place with annually some 200.000 visitors this day in January with only some 8-10 persons going out there was really a special "off season" experience.

Usually, also in the winter, it is often some buses with passengers from the coastal express - but not on this particular day.

I was surprised by the county's road service - having a daily convoy service all for free through the winter even when only 3 small cars was in the convoy for the last 13km out to the North Cape center.

Honningsvaag the northernmost city of Norway (Arctic)

Honningsvaag the northernmost city of Norway (Arctic)

    From the net:
Honningsvaag is the northernmost city of Norway. It is located in Nordkapp Municipality in Finnmark county.
Legislation effective in 1997 states that a Norwegian city must have at least 5,000 inhabitants, but Honningsvåg was declared a city in 1996, thus exempt from this legislation. The 1.07-square-kilometre (260-acre) town has a population (2013) of 2,415, which gives the town a population density of 2,257 inhabitants per square kilometre (5,850/sq mi).

Honningsvåg is situated at a bay on the southeastern side of the large island of Magerøya, while the famous North Cape and its visitors center is on the northern side of the island. Honningsvåg is a port of call for cruise ships, especially in the summer months.

The ice-free ocean (southwestern part of the Barents Sea) provides rich fisheries and tourism is also important to the town. Even at 71°N, many private gardens in Honningsvåg have trees, although rarely more than 3 to 4 metres.

The coastal express at harbor in Honningsvag by North Cape, Norway arctic

The coastal express at harbor in Honningsvag by North Cape, Norway arctic

After driving 500km from Oslo I have arrived 2000km north in the small village Honningsvag close to the North Cape.

The distance 500 km is between Oslo and Trondheim in Mid Norway where I loaded the car to the North bound coastal express that have transported me an the car further 1500km North.

(What a country - had I drived app 2000km South I had ended in Barcelona... quite another experience...)

Old wood houses in arctic Tromso / Tromsø, Norway

Old wood house in arctic Tromso / Tromsø, Norway

    From the net:
The centre of Tromsø features the largest collection of historical wooden houses north of Trondheim, and is home to one of the most important concentrations of Empire houses in Norway.

Empire is the name of an international style inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome.

In Tromsø, however, the style has a special twist: the buildings are made of wood, not stone. White doorways with half-columns and hound’s tooth patterns in the window frames – it is all wood.

Since Tromsø grew up in the 1800s, it has been dominated by Empire style architecture and the town centre features one of the most important concentrations of Empire architecture in Norway.
